Board Certified Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery for pets, primarily dogs, focuses on treating serious musculoskeletal problems like fractures, Cranial Cruciate Ligament Tears (CCL), and Luxating Patella's, among other concerns. These surgeries aim to realign bones, stabilize joints, and restore function and improve mobility. They can involve various techniques like bone plates, pins, screws, or even artificial joints, etc.

When is it needed?
Orthopedic surgery is often necessary for injuries like fractures, ligament tears, or conditions like hip dysplasia or patella (knee cap) luxation that cause pain and limited mobility. Occasionally injuries may require more involved surgical procedures such as limb amputation. Our clinic offers these surgeries to our clients.

Recovery:
Recovery times vary depending on the type of surgery, but it can take several weeks-months for a pet to fully recover and regain normal function. Our experienced team will work with you and your pet to establish a care plan, timeline, discuss the process and procedure, recheck exams following surgery to ensure your pet is recovering well and you feel knowledgeable and supported following the decision to pursue an orthopedic surgery.

Cost:
The cost of orthopedic surgery can range widely depending on the specific procedure and location. We work with our clients by providing up-front estimates for these types of surgeries so you know what to expect. We can also discuss setting you up with Care Credit to assist in the costs of these types of surgeries.

Pre-surgical care:
Before surgery, your pet will need pre-anesthetic blood work, pre and post-surgical x-rays, and a thorough physical examination to ensure they are healthy enough to undergo the procedure.

Post-surgical care:
After surgery, your pet will need pain medication, limited activity, and potentially rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility. We will provide you a care plan for after surgery to support you during their recovery.

Common Conditions Requiring Orthopedic Surgery:

  • Fractures: Broken bones due to trauma.
  • CCL Tears: A common injury in dogs, especially large breed dogs, often requiring surgery.
  • Luxating Patellas: When the kneecap dislocates.
  • Hip Dysplasia: A condition where the hip joint doesn't develop properly
